In the Roman pantheon, he was also known as Mercury. The role of Hermes is essential in the Greek Mythology as he represents the interconnectivity and communication among humans and gods.

Hermes was born to Zeus and Maia, one of the seven Pleiades, a Greek divine entity. According to legends, he was born in a cave on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia. He was said to have been precocious and developed many skills from his childhood including music, speech, and writing. Hermes was revered as the messenger of the gods and was attributed to being the god of messengers and communication.

The symbolism of Hermes and his role in mythology has been underlined by the many characters that are associated with the god. Hermes was often depicted wearing winged sandals, which proved to be useful for his role as a messenger. The sandals also showed his ability to move from one place to another quickly. The messenger god was also portrayed wearing a helmet or a petasus, a wide-brimmed hat adorned with wings, which was meant to also symbolize his divine nature.

Hermes was also attributed to the caduceus, a winged rod or staff with two snakes twined around it. The symbol of the caduceus has become the modern symbol of medicine in western cultures. In Greek mythology, the caduceus was instrumental in Hermes' role as the messenger of the gods as it imbued him with powers of authority and bestowed upon him the ability to give the dead a passage to the afterlife.

Hermes was also associated with commerce, trade, and trickery. He was often depicted as a cunning god who outsmarted other gods and mortals alike. Hermes' cunningness extended to commerce, where he was viewed as the god of trade. He had the reputation of being a good negotiator and was believed to have created the first currency exchange. The association of Hermes with commerce and trade, also endowed him with connection and influence over prospertiy.
